Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It differs from CBT in its approach. CBT focuses on recognizing and changing problematic thoughts and behaviors. DBT focuses more on helping patients cope with intense emotions and relationships through acceptance and validation. The goal of DBT is to help patients to regulate their emotions, healthy ways to cope with stress and improve their relationships. DBT is an evidenced-based approach of psychotherapy that originated in the treatment of borderline personality disorder. It has since been found to be effective in the treatment of other psychiatric disorders such as depression, bulimia, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
